vidIQ SEO Score Explained

The vidIQ SEO score offers an overview of how thoroughly videos are optimized based on several factors, such as tag count, tag volume, and keyword usage in the title and description. This score can still be useful for creators who want to ensure their content meets foundational optimization criteria.

For the vidIQ SEO score, 50% is controllable by the creator (hence the Actionable part), and 50% depends on performance (thus the Performance part ). It's hard to directly influence the latter half in the short term, as the video's performance and the channel's size/performance/relevance play a big part in search performance.

Actionable

When uploading a video, focus on the actionable 50%:

  1. Tag count — add at least five tags to the video

  2. Tag volume — tags with a high volume score

  3. Keywords in the title — at least five keywords added to the title

  4. Keywords in Description - at least five keywords added to the description

  5. Triple Keywords — means that you have used recommended keywords in the three most important places for your video title, tags, and in your video's description.

Performance

The Performance part of the vidIQ score is entirely determined by the video's overall performance, so they can't directly control it. Of course, they will influence it by optimizing their title and thumbnail, crafting their content to keep people watching longer, working to market your content after it's out, etc.

  1. Ranked tags — are displayed when the video is ranked high in the YouTube search bar. So, if you have a rank tag with number #2, your video will be second if someone searches for that particular keyword.

  2. High-volume tags refer to keywords that rank high in the YouTube search bar and are also a "hot" topic with many searches. Usually, high-volume tags are used if the video is ranked in 10th place or less on the YouTube search results.

Unfortunately, you can't do anything special to increase those numbers or find them, as they are based on the performance of your videos. The more high-quality videos you post and the more engagement you gain, the higher YouTube will place you on the list.

Views Tab

The Views Tab in the vidIQ Scorecard offers a detailed analysis of a video’s performance, helping creators understand key metrics and trends.

Here is a bit more detail on each module inside the vidIQ Views tab of the Scorecard:

  • Engagement: is a measure of discovered engagement as a percentage of total views.

  • Outlier: measures a video’s performance relative to the average performance of other videos on the same channel. It compares the video's view count to the channel’s average views within a similar timeframe. • VPH (Views Per Hour): Learn if a video is trending right now

  • Views Graph:  shows the number of views a video got in the last 24 hours, 1st seven days, 1st 28 days, and All time.

  • Thumbnail and Title changes: The feature in the vidIQ Scorecard provides valuable insights into how adjustments to a video’s title or thumbnail may have impacted its performance. This information is tracked and displayed directly on the Views Graph and in a dedicated section below the graph. You can even download and see the date these thumbnails were published for further analysis.
