What are Recommended Tags?

The “Recommend Tags” feature in the vidIQ extension offers valuable support for creators aiming to enhance video discoverability through optimized tags. Although tags play a minimal role in YouTube’s ranking algorithm, they can still be useful for addressing common misspellings, clarifying content, and providing additional context. This tool is especially handy for creators who want to maximize visibility, particularly when viewers might search for related but misspelled keywords.

How to use Recommended Tags:

1. Optimize with Descriptive Words:

Start by using the strongest descriptive words from your video title. This helps maintain relevance and increases the chances of your video appearing in related searches. For YouTube Shorts, be aware that tags may hold less significance; therefore, manually adding specific tags in the Tag section of YouTube Studio is highly recommended.

2. Recommended Tags:

Click on the “Boost This Video” button to unlock the recommended tags feature (otherwise, a purple lock icon will be shown). vidIQ will generate a list of relevant tags based on your video metadata.

Please note that if you’re on a Free or Pro plan, you will receive only three default tag suggestions without the option to refresh results or ability to click on "Boost this video".

Also, using “Boost This Video” or adding many tags does not guarantee higher views or improved ranking. Tags are just one part of the optimization strategy. YouTube’s algorithm prioritizes content quality, viewer engagement, and watch time when determining video rankings.

3. Filter and Sort Tags:

Once you have clicked Boost This Video, a list of recommended tags will appear. Tags are sorted based on Relevancy by default, but you can change the sorting criteria to:

Relevancy: The relevancy of the tags to your video.

Overall: The keywords with the highest keyword overall score are in descending order.

vidIQ Keyword Volume: The keywords with the highest search volume are in descending order.

vidIQ Competition Score: The keywords with the highest competitor score in descending order.

4. Additional Tags Features:

Templates: To streamline your process, create a Tag Template. Simply enter your tags, give the template a name, and save it for future use. This is especially useful for videos with recurring themes or series.

Translate: Select the specific tags you wish to translate, choose the source language (or use “Auto-detect”), and select the target language.

Keyword inspector: Use this tool to research and discover effective keywords for your video, helping you find high-relevance tags to increase your reach. It works similarly to the Keyword Research tool .

Copy tags: To quickly replicate tags for another video, select the tags you want to copy and click Copy Tags. You can then paste them from your clipboard directly into the tag input field of a new video or save them for later use.

Make the most of vidIQ’s Tags feature by strategically adding relevant tags, leveraging keyword insights, and utilizing templates to streamline your workflow. If you want to explore more vidIQ features within YouTube Studio's upload/edit flow, follow this link.
