vidIQ for Instagram brings the AI Coach to Instagram creators. AI Coach watches your Reels, gives feedback on what's working and what isn't, generates content ideas based on your style, and creates Reel cover images, all in one conversation.
What is vidIQ for Instagram?
vidIQ for Instagram is a set of capabilities inside the AI Coach that analyzes your public Instagram Reels and helps you make better ones. It can:
Watch your Reels and score them on a five-part framework (The Stop, The Gap, The Momentum, The Feeling, The Reach) to pinpoint exactly what's holding back your performance.
Generate Reel ideas that match your style and the conversations actually happening in your niche right now.
Design Reel cover images in your visual style that double as a storyboard for your opening shot.
The goal: make your next Reel a banger.
Which plans include vidIQ for Instagram?
vidIQ for Instagram is available on all plans (Free, Boost, and Max). It uses the same monthly credit allowance as the rest of AI Coach:
Free: 150 credits/month
Boost: from 2,000 credits/month
Max: from 6,000 credits/month
The Instagram tools share the same credits as the YouTube AI Coach tools, so credits used in either mode draw from the same monthly pool.
How do I get started with vidIQ for Instagram?
vidIQ for Instagram is available on the web at app.vidiq.com/ai-coach and in the iOS or Android app.
To start, go to app.vidiq.com/ai-coach.
Add an Instagram account using the channel selector at the top of the page or in the sidebar.
Enter your Instagram handle (for example,
@yourhandle).Make sure the Instagram account is selected in the top channel dropdown.
Start chatting. Try "Analyze my Reels and tell me what's working."
You do not need to log into Instagram or grant permissions. AI Coach analyzes your public profile from your handle alone, and your account does not need to be connected to vidIQ.
Note: Only public Instagram accounts can be analyzed. Private accounts and age-restricted accounts are not supported.
How does vidIQ for Instagram help me grow?
AI Coach has three core capabilities for Instagram.
1. Reel Analysis
AI Coach pulls your 6 most recent Reels, watches each one in full (video frames, on-screen text, voiceover, background audio), and scores each Reel on the Five Forces framework:
The Stop: Does the first frame stop the scroll?
The Gap: Is there an unanswered question that pulls people through?
The Momentum: Does new information land every 2 to 3 seconds?
The Feeling: Is the emotional charge strong enough to drive shares and saves?
The Reach: Is it built for strangers, or just your existing followers?
Each force gets rated Strong, Moderate, or Weak, then cross-referenced against your engagement metrics so you know which one to fix first. For example, if your Gap is Strong on every Reel but your Stop is only Moderate, your opening frame is the bottleneck.
2. Idea Generation
When you ask for ideas, AI Coach:
Studies your style. It learns your hook patterns, keywords, and visual signature from your existing Reels.
Researches what your audience is talking about right now across Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.
Generates hook-first ideas that fit your style and tap into one of seven proven hook categories (Contrarian, Results, Transformation, Experiment, Reactive, Pattern Interrupt, Relatable).
The more context you give it, the sharper the ideas. Let the analysis run first, then ask for ideas.
3. Reel Cover Generation
AI Coach generates 9:16 cover images using your existing Reel thumbnails as style references, matching your color palette, typography, and visual language. The cover doubles as a storyboard for your opening shot, so the feedback from your Five Forces analysis ("put your most shocking fact on screen first") becomes an actual first-frame composition.
This is the most popular follow-up after an analysis. About half of users ask for a cover next.
Useful prompts after your Reels are analyzed
The analysis is the setup, not the destination. The biggest wins come from continuing the conversation. Below are six guided flows you can copy and paste.
Flow 1: Find your lane
Figure out your niche, audience, and strongest positioning.
"Analyze my Instagram account @[handle]. What's my current niche and who's my audience?"
"What are 2 to 3 content lanes I could own in this space? Show me the gap between where I am and where the opportunity is."
"I want to go with [Lane X]. Lock that in for everything we do from here."
Flow 2: Decide what to make next
Get five data-backed Reel ideas instead of generic suggestions.
"What does a viral Reel look like in my niche right now? Research Reddit, Instagram trending, and what's getting views in [your niche]. Give me 5 ideas."
"For each idea, show me the topic, a hook, why it's trending right now, why it fits my account, and the best format and duration."
"I like idea [#X]. Write me a full script for it."
Flow 3: Learn from accounts that are winning
Mine the formats of accounts beating you, without copying their topics.
"Find 2 to 3 Instagram accounts in [your niche] that are getting more views than me. Show me their best-performing Reels."
"Break down what makes those Reels work. I don't want their topics. I want the structure, hook pattern, and pacing they use."
"Take those patterns and give me 5 video ideas that use the same structures but for my content and my niche."
Flow 4: Turn an idea into a teleprompter-ready script
"Before you write anything, analyze my last 3 to 5 Reels and learn how I talk. Match my tone, pacing, and personality."
"Now write a full Reel script for [idea]. Include a beat map: Hook (0 to 3 sec), Setup (3 to 10 sec), Core (10 to 25 sec), Payoff (25 to 35 sec), CTA. Keep it under 40 seconds."
"Give me 3 different hook options for the opening. Different angles, different energy."
"Clean it up for teleprompter. Just the words, no formatting, no stage directions. Ready to read on camera."
Flow 5: Fix a Reel that underperformed
"Watch this Reel: [paste link]. Tell me what's not working."
"Score it on The Stop, The Gap, The Momentum, The Feeling, and The Reach. Rate each one."
"Give me the top 3 fixes, ranked by impact vs. difficulty."
"Now rescript it with all three fixes applied: beat map, 3 hook options, teleprompter-ready."
Flow 6: Repurpose a YouTube video for Reels
"Here's my YouTube video: [paste link]. Adapt it for Instagram Reels."
"Adjust the hook for Instagram, optimize the length for Reels, swap the CTA for IG, and add visual pacing notes."
"Write the full Instagram script with a caption and hashtags for my niche."
Additional prompts to try
Not sure where to start? Try one of these:
"Analyze my Reels and tell me what's working and what's not."
"What's the #1 thing I should fix to get more views on my Reels?"
"Give me 5 Reel ideas based on what's trending in my niche."
"Make me a cover image for my next Reel about [topic]."
"Analyze @[competitor] and tell me what they're doing differently."
Troubleshooting
Why am I getting a "Failed to analyze Reels" error?
The two most common causes:
The Instagram account is private. AI Coach can only analyze public accounts. Switch the account to public and try again.
A temporary issue downloading the videos. Wait a moment and retry the request.
If the account has fewer than 3 Reels, the analysis will still run but will be less detailed.
Why is it analyzing the wrong account?
AI Coach analyzes whichever handle you provide. It works on any public Instagram account, which is great for competitor research but easy to trip over if you mistype your own handle. Double-check the handle is spelled correctly and selected in the top channel dropdown.
Why do the ideas feel generic?
The AI generates much sharper ideas with more context. Try this:
Run the Reel analysis first before asking for ideas.
Be specific in your request. "Give me Reel ideas about [topic] for [audience]" will always beat "Give me ideas."
Stay in the same conversation. Each turn builds on the prior context.
The "Decide what to make next" and "Learn from accounts that are winning" flows above are designed to give the AI enough signal to generate ideas tailored to your niche.
My Instagram account is public, but it still won't fetch. What do I do?
Some public profiles fail to fetch even when they look reachable in a browser. If you've confirmed:
The handle is spelled correctly,
The profile is public, and
The Instagram account is selected in the top dropdown,
then try again later or test with a different public account. If the same handle keeps failing, contact Support with the handle so the team can investigate.
Why did I hit a credit limit during Instagram analysis?
Instagram analysis is heavier than a basic text chat. It can load posts, pull video data, analyze voice and tone, research trends across platforms, and generate scripts or covers in a single turn. Your monthly credit allowance refreshes at the start of each billing cycle, and upgrading your plan increases your monthly allowance.
How do I switch or remove the Instagram account?
Use the channel dropdown at the top of AI Coach:
Open the top dropdown and select the Instagram account.
Click the disconnect icon and confirm.
Add the new Instagram handle.
The Channel Settings page does not yet list Instagram connections, so use the top dropdown to manage them.
Can I ask Instagram-specific questions while my YouTube channel is selected?
For best results, switch to your Instagram account in the top dropdown before asking Instagram-specific questions. Asking with the wrong context selected can produce mismatched or confusing results.
Does vidIQ for Instagram work for TikTok or YouTube Shorts?
No. vidIQ for Instagram is specifically for Instagram Reels.
For YouTube Shorts, use the standard YouTube AI Coach mode.
TikTok is not supported.
That said, the hooks and ideas the AI generates often translate well across short-form platforms.
Does it analyze Instagram Stories or regular posts?
No. vidIQ for Instagram analyzes Reels only. Stories and static image posts are not included yet.
Can I see Instagram analytics like views, revenue, or traffic sources?
Not yet. AI Coach only sees the public data anyone visiting your Instagram profile would see (your Reels, captions, and public engagement). Private analytics like revenue, CPM, and traffic sources are not available.
Do I need to log into Instagram or connect my account?
No. AI Coach reads your public Reels using only your handle. No login, OAuth, or permissions are required.
