Uploading and Editing on YouTube with vidIQ

vidIQ provides optimization tools directly inside YouTube Studio during upload and editing. These tools help you improve your video's titles, descriptions, thumbnails, tags, and scheduling before publishing — so you can make data-driven decisions that elevate your content.

Getting Started

These features are available through the vidIQ browser extension. After installing it, vidIQ's tools will automatically appear in two places:

  • While editing a video: Head to YouTube Studio, open the video you want to edit, and you’ll find vidIQ’s edit features integrated into the Edit screen.

  • While uploading a video: Upload a video inside YouTube Studio and follow the upload process as usual. vidIQ's tools will appear in the upload window as you set up your video.

Tip: For best results, wait until your video has fully finished processing in YouTube Studio before using vidIQ's optimization tools.

Low-dialogue videos: If your video contains minimal speech or heavy background noise, consider adding context manually (e.g., a descriptive title, tags, or a few keywords in the description). This helps vidIQ generate more accurate suggestions.

Floating vidIQ Toolbar

The vidIQ extension adds a floating toolbar inside YouTube Studio so you can quickly access any tool without scrolling. You'll find it on the left side during upload, or at the bottom of the screen while editing.

Clicking any icon in the toolbar opens the corresponding optimization panel. The toolbar includes the following tools, each covered in detail below: Optimize Score, Title Suggestions, Description Suggestions, Thumbnail Suggestions, Tag Suggestions, Best Time to Post, Magic Fill, and Description Suggestion Preferences.

Optimize Score

The Optimize Score gives you real-time feedback on how well your video is optimized for YouTube. It analyzes your title, description, thumbnail, tags, and posting time to calculate a score from 0 to 100. The higher the score, the better optimized your video is for visibility and engagement.

To view the score breakdown, click the IQ (Optimize Score) icon in the floating toolbar.

How is the Optimize Score calculated?

Not all elements contribute equally. vidIQ weights each component based on how much it influences whether viewers click and watch your video:

Component

Weight

Title

48%

Thumbnail

48%

Description

2.5%

Tags

1%

Scheduled Post Time

0.5%

Your title and thumbnail together account for 96% of the total score, since they have the strongest influence on click-through rate and viewer engagement. The remaining elements provide additional context but have a smaller impact. Your Optimize Score updates automatically as you make changes, helping you quickly spot the most impactful areas to improve.

How to improve your Optimize Score

Since title and thumbnail make up 96% of the score, focus on those first. Use the Title Suggestions and AI Thumbnail Suggestions tools (described below) to generate optimized options. Once those are strong, add a keyword-rich description, relevant tags, and schedule your video for an optimal time to push the score higher.

Title Suggestions

Title Suggestions help you generate optimized, engaging titles for your videos. The tool analyzes your video content and generates title ideas designed to drive higher engagement and visibility.

Type your video title or idea into the Title field. As you type, vidIQ automatically provides a Title Score (1–100) in the upper-right corner of the title box. This score indicates how well your title is optimized in real time.

AI Description Generator

The AI Description Generator helps you quickly craft optimized video descriptions directly inside YouTube Studio. It generates descriptions based on your video's title and context, helping improve discoverability while saving you time. You can use the generated description as-is or customize it to match your video's topic, tone, and audience.

Improving description accuracy

You can guide the AI by providing additional context through Description Suggestion Preferences. To access these settings:

  • Click the Description Preferences icon (sliders icon) in the Description Suggestions panel, or

  • Click the Upload Settings icon from the floating toolbar and open Description Preferences.

From there, you can specify:

  • What your video is about

  • Target keywords

  • Desired emotional direction

If suggestions don't match your video

  • Click the Refresh icon to generate new variations.

  • Add more context directly into the YouTube description field.

  • Update your Description Suggestion Preferences with more detailed information.

vidIQ will use this additional context to produce more relevant suggestions.

Tip: If description suggestions don't populate automatically or display "none," add some context or keywords in the description field, or open Description Suggestion Preferences and add more detail there.

Keyword highlights

When generating description suggestions, vidIQ may highlight keywords along with a keyword score. This score reflects search volume and competition, helping you identify keywords with strong potential. If keyword performance is important to your strategy, you can use these insights to focus on stronger search opportunities.

AI Thumbnail Suggestions

The AI Thumbnail Suggestions feature helps you create optimized thumbnails directly inside YouTube Studio using vidIQ's AI. You'll see three options:

You’ll see three options to generate the desired thumbnail:

Quick Generate

Click Quick Generate to instantly create thumbnail options. These are generated automatically based on your video's content, visual patterns, and performance data. This is the fastest way to get ready-to-use thumbnail ideas.

Generate New Concept

Click Generate New Concept to create fully customized thumbnails. This opens the Thumbnail Generator, where you can:

  • Describe your thumbnail idea using text

  • Upload images from your device

  • Use frames from your current video

  • Upload thumbnails from previous videos

The AI generates thumbnails based on your instructions and selected assets.

Start from a Frame

Click Start from a Frame to select a specific frame from your video. vidIQ uses that frame as a foundation and enhances it with AI to create optimized variations. This is useful when you already have a strong visual moment in your video.

Tag Suggestions

The Tag Suggestions feature helps you identify relevant tags for your video directly within YouTube Studio. Although tags play a minimal role in YouTube's ranking algorithm, they can still help address common misspellings, clarify content, and provide additional context — especially when viewers might search for related but misspelled keywords.

You can:

  • Click the "+" icon next to any suggestion to instantly add it to your video's tags.

  • Use Tag Templates to quickly apply a saved group of tags you use frequently. (You can create and manage templates within the Tag Suggestions panel.)

  • Translate tags into other languages to expand your video's reach.

  • Use the Keyword Inspector to research individual tags and evaluate their search volume and competition.

  • Click Refresh to discover alternative tag ideas.

  • Enter your own tags manually to provide additional context.

Best time to Post

The Best Time to Post feature (labeled Schedule Post in the toolbar) analyzes your channel's audience activity and recommends an optimal publishing time. When scheduling a video, vidIQ displays your channel's peak activity window and suggests a time when your audience is most active.

Publishing during peak activity can help your video gain early views and engagement, which signals to YouTube that your content is worth recommending.

Magic Fill

Magic Fill automatically generates and applies optimized metadata for your video in one click. When you click Magic Fill, vidIQ analyzes your video and populates your title, description, and tags with AI-generated suggestions.

You can review and edit any of the generated content before saving or publishing your video.

Thumbnail Preview

After optimizing your video, you can preview how it will look on YouTube's home page and in search results using the Thumbnail Preview feature. This gives you a chance to evaluate your title and thumbnail together and make adjustments before publishing. For more details, see the Thumbnail Preview Guide.
